The Charlotte Police Department provides an FOIA form for individuals who wish to request access to government records. The form requires the requester input their name, address, and contact information. Details of the incident must be specific enough so that the City can properly locate the record. Fees for the request depend upon the amount for labor costs, materials, cost to mail the record, and cost of making copies. Requests can be submitted in-person, through the mail, fax, or emailed. The Charlotte Police Department will issue a response within 5 business days. Requests will either be granted, partially denied, or completely denied. If denied, the FOIA coordinator will provide an explanation for the denial, which the requester then has the right to appeal. Similarly, the requester has the option to appeal an FOIA processing fee that seems too expensive.
